Animated Doggie In The Spotlight - Mary Jane and Muffy Animated Doggie

Mary Jane Sorgel has come a long way since her days as a golden girl to Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers. Although she no longer delights fans during halftime, Mary Jane is still entertaining. Mary Jane and her husband Bill are part time Florida residents. They, along with their Yorkshire terrier, Muffy, divide their time between Key Biscayne and Mequon, Wisconsin. It is because of Muffy that Mary Jane has returned to the spotlight. You see Mary Jane and Muffy have an act, an act that has taken them all the way to the Late Show with David Lettermen. Mary Jane twirls her batons while balancing Muffy on her head-all this to the tune of "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?" played on the guitar by Mr. Sorgel. Muffy and Mary Jane have been on Lettermen twice. The last appearance was in 1986 during the Lettermen A.M. Special, filmed on a 747 traveling between New York and Miami at 500mph at an altitude of 25,000 feet. Since then she has gone on to the Rush Limbaugh show, Primetime Pets, the Sally Jessy Raphael Show.

They have been the subject of many articles including a write up in PM Magazine. Most recently, Mary Jane and Muffy were a question on Jeopardy. Their act is so unique that they were included in the 1996 Guinness Book of World Records. "It started with me teaching Muffy tricks to do for fun. Everyone enjoyed it and then Lettermen came along," said Sorgel, who has been surprised at what she and her dog have achieved. It all starts with Mary Jane and Muffy visiting patients at nursing homes, hospitals, and day care centers trying to cheer people up. Ms. Sorgel and her talented pet were chosen to be in an American Humane Society commercial. The original Muffy died in 1986. Bill bought Muffy II and in a few days she was trained. The Sorgels currently have two yorkies and continue to entertain. Mary Jane closed the chapter as Green Bay Packers Golden Girls in 1972 when Bill asked her to marry him. She is the only woman in the Packer Hall of Fame. After all this fame, what's next? Well, Bill and Mary Jane agree, "I think this is as far as we go. There's no other place to take it."
