Animated Doggie The Pet Post - Be Kind to Animals Wee (May 3-9, 1998) Animated Doggie

One hundred years ago, the idea that people should be kind to animals was considered avant-garde - a novelty. Common opinion held that animals were placed on this earth for us to use, and abuse, if need be--for our profit.

But in 1877, several groups courageously defied the status quo, joining together to form the American Humane Association (AHA). The goal of this organization was to build a national entity that would be a voice for those who had none--the animals.

To bring further attention to this new perspective of helping instead of hurting animals, AHA established the country's first national week for animals--Be Kind To Animals Week--in 1915. This unique approach to reaching the public was the inspiration of the young organization's leader at the time, Dr. William O. Stillman. By launching this special week, Stillman marked the birth of humane education nationally.

The nation's first Be Kind to Animal's Week was orchestrated by 43 state committees armed with three goals.

  • to encourage the clergy to spread the message about kindness to animals by observing Humane Sunday (the Sunday launching the first Be Kind to Animals Week)
  • to visit local schools and promote the development of humane education
  • to publicize the good work's of the nation's humane societies

People who had never heard of the wonderful work being done on behalf of animals saw column after column of editorials during that first Be Kind to Animals Week.

"On the whole, the first Be Kind to Animals Week and Humane Sunday proved to be great successes," said Dr. Stillman. "The auspicious beginning ensures their being retained as annual events to stimulate and revive humane thought."

Today, Dr. Stillman's vision of Be Kind to Animals Week still holds true. The week is now celebrated by thousands of animal care and control agencies across the country. Recognized officially by the 103rd Congress, it is now the oldest week of its kind in the nation. And the week continues to serve as a reminder of the debt humankind owes to the other animals of the earth--both wild and domestic.

Each year, AHA seeks national sponsorship in order to provide local agencies with more materials and ideas for their unique and widespread celebrations during this week. National sponsors for the 1998 Be Kind to Animals Week will be announced in the coming months. In addition, AHA seeks national media attention to link the activities during BKAW into one colossal celebration for animals.

On May 3-9, 1998 animal agencies throughout this country will continue to honor BKAW's 83-year-old message of being kind to animals, by hosting special events, talking to the media, and educating people on the humane treatment of animals.

By uniting our efforts, we're creating a tradition that hopefully will ensure that animals are well thought of and well cared for in the future.

Be Kind to Animals Week is a registered trademark of the American Humane Association.
